James 4:1-17
Humble Thyself

(Memory verse: Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up. James 4:10)

Study 7 of 9

Time To Focus
What do you do when you want something really badly?

Have you ever seen anyone act like a complete jerk because of wanting something?

Time to Study
Read James 4:1-3
What is the real source of conflict between people?

These verses talk about being self-centered. List some of the traits of a self-centered person.

Do verses 1-3 describe the person Jesus wants you to be?

Read James 4:4-6
According to these verses, how does God view a self-centered person?

Read James 4:7-10
How does God want you to respond to the world?

We are so use to trying to act tough and “assertive” that this advice sounds foreign to us. The devil wants you to stand up for your rights, not let anyone push you around, and demand whatever makes you happy. Sounds good , right? WRONG! That is not what God wants from you. That is what causes a world full of conflict. God wants you to show self control as you deal with other people. You should not be confronting people or running over people just to get what you want.
.
On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being high and 1 low, how much self control do you feel that you have?

What can you do to gain more self control?

God also wants you to “Seek First his kingdom...” (Matthew 6:33) God wants you to “Humble yourself before the Lord...” God wants you to let go of your so called rights and seek holiness .

Time to Do
James 4:12 says “There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy.” Jesus is the one that is able to save you. It is time to put down all the desires of the world and humble yourself before Jesus. If you have never invited Jesus to be your Lord and Savior, this is what you need to do.

1. Humble yourself and admit you are a sinner.
2. Believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died for you and rose again.
3. Humble yourself to receive Jesus into your heart as your Lord and Savior.

If you need to invite Jesus to be your Lord and savior, do it now. James 4:13-17 tells us that we should not put things off until tomorrow. We do not know what tomorrow will be like. We do not know what next week will be like. All we know for sure is that you can respond to Jesus today. Do it now.

How do you need to respond to Jesus today?
Receive Jesus as your savior and Lord
Choose to humble myself since I am saved
