What is the place of prayer in the Christian’s life?


What does faith mean, and what is its place in our lives? (think back to all of James)


What should you do at all times for all reasons? (vs. 13)


What is your responsibility for other Christians? (vs. 16, vs. 19-20)


These verses give us a model for praying for those who are ill or have need. In your own words, describe how to do that.




For your information: Some people believe that anointing with oil is a key part of this process, and that if you leave out the oil, you are not praying properly. Others believe that, since oil and alcohol were two important medicines at the time, these verses are saying pray for the person AND medicate him. (ex. See Luke 10:34, the parable of the good Samaritan) Still others believe the anointing with oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirit’s anointing. It really doesn’t matter a whole lot which way you believe. The power is in the prayer (James 5:16) However, it is good to understand why one church prays and anoints with oil, while another just prays. Don’t judge, just pray the best you know how.
